URBAN COFFEE GROUNDS RECYCLE CENTER: A CUP OF CHANGE
The world consumes close to 3 billion cups of coffee every day.
70 MILLION CUPS EACH DAY 1000 EVERY SECOND.
Project description
Urban design is the shaping of a community’s physical form in a way that considers a multiplicity of objectives and interests through an inclusive, public decision-making process. Combining the practices of architecture, planning, and landscape architecture, urban design addresses the functional and aesthetic qualities of the physical environment at a range of scales, from the individual streetscape, park, or block to the larger community, city, or region.
In Malaysia, coffee is not an uncommon beverage. Not only that, Malaysians are big consumers of coffee chains. Malaysia’s coffee production is small, 3,369 metric tonnes (MT)
in 2018. In 2017, the world produced 9.2million (m) MTof coffee,
Malaysia’s production is merely 0.1% of global production. (Malaysia’s import of raw coffee beans has been on the rise). The coffee planters of Malaysia face challenges such as competition with other cash crops and high production costs
The challenge: SDG 12 RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION
Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
TARGET 12.5-By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse
TARGET 12.6-Encourage companies,to adopt sustainable practices and integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle
TARGET 12.A-Support developing countries to strengthen their scientific and technological capacity to move towards more sustainable patterns of consumption and production
Facts about coffee grounds
Every day, about 3 billion cups of coffee are consumed globally. 70 million cups each day 1000 every second...
The UK alone is responsible for 95 million of those cups. This cause UK produces 500,000T of waste coffee grounds each year.
In US 64% of adults drink coffee. This amounts to about 400 million cups of coffee consumed daily in the United States. Consequently, Americans drink 146 billion cups of coffee every year
Why recycle coffee grounds important?
In 2018, over 9 billion kilos of coffee were consumed worldwide. When you brew a cup of coffee, less than 1% of coffee's health-enhancing compounds are utilized. 99% has been mistakenly treated as waste for centuries.
In short, SCGs are the coffee grounds remaining after your brew. SCG is a by-product with fine particle size and high organic load. Its chemical composition is based on cellulose, nitrocellulose, proteins, lipids, polyphony, minerals and different products formed by the Millard reaction during the roasting process, such as melanomas.
These compounds have shown several biological activities, including anti-proliferation, antioxidants, and antimicrobial effects (Mariotti-Celis et al. 2017).
HOW DOES COFFEE 'WASTE' CONTRIBUTE TO CLIMATE CHANGE?
Every day, over 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed worldwide, and the SCG often ends up as waste in plastic bags, mixed with other trash in garbage dumps. The 9 billion kilos of coffee consumed yearly worldwide is treated as waste, or is not properly disposed, being left decomposing in a landfill and generating tons of methane a day, a greenhouse gas 86x harmful for the environment than CO2. For every tonne of coffee “waste” decomposed in a landfill, 340m3 of methane are released in the environment. The yearly environmental impact of coffee waste decomposition is equivalent to 10 million car emissions.
Objective
To provide the sustainable consumption and sustainable recycle product from coffee grounds to community.
Opportunities
Revitalize the local coffee planting industry
Helping local industries develop their own coffee PRODUCT supply and recycling coffee grounds
FACADE
BILLING COUNTER + PRODUCT DISPLAY
COLLECTION CENTER OF COFFEE GROUNDS
Pave the way for sustainability in daily life. Collect the coffee grounds for sustainable use. Provide a collection point for the public to donate their used coffee grounds
PRODUCTION- COFFEE GROUNDS PRODUCT DISPLAY
Design & Sustainability
To promote reusing products and raw materials; better to opt for multi-use than throwaway products, because every decision has consequences. Starting from the most accessible products around people, let them know the durability of environmentally friendly products through experience
1ST FLOOR INFORMATION ROOM
INFORMATION AREA
Educate the public about the correct ways to dispose of waste because this may be the first
step to help the planet or others. Let the public know the importance of environmentally friendly products. Achieving zero waste might be easier said than done, but the simple step of recycling the business’s spent coffee grounds is a good place to start.
FUNGI INCUBATION ROOM
PRODUCE MORE CHANCES IN REUSE AND RECYCLE THE NATURAL RESOURCES
Take a massive waste stream and use it to grow gourmet Oyster mushrooms in a way
that is easier than traditional mushroom cultivation.
CONNECT TO WASTE STREAM CONCEPT
A waste stream concept is a way to continuously generate new natural resources from organic waste through an environmentally friendly recycling method.
All of these businesses directly impact the waste stream, but more importantly, they impact our overall culture of the business.
BENEFIT OF GROWING MUSHROOM ON COFFEE GROUNDS
1.No need to sterilize substrate
2.Easy to source substrate
3.Simple to get started
4.Sustainable protein
